Wisdom September - Day 1
Proverbs 1:7-9
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.”
Welcome to Wisdom September! I’m Caroline, and today we begin our journey through Proverbs with a special reflection from Elder Ayobami.
Elder Ayobami read Proverbs 1:7-9 and unpacked the richness of each verse. He reminded us that “the fear of the Lord” is not terror but deep reverence for God, a recognition that He is the ultimate source of all truth and knowledge. Wisdom begins when we approach life with that posture of humility before Him.
From verses 8-9, Elder Ayobami emphasised the importance of valuing the guidance of parents and elders. He explained that wisdom and instruction are not heavy burdens, but rather adornments of grace and honour. They shape us, protect us, and make our lives beautiful in God’s sight.
To illustrate these truths, he pointed us to the example of Jesus. Jesus showed perfect reverence for God by submitting fully to the Father’s will. He also modelled respect toward His earthly parents, living in obedience to Mary and Joseph as He grew. Even at the cross, Jesus ensured His mother was cared for. In every way, He is the picture of wisdom in action.
Elder Ayobami concluded with a prayer, asking God to fill us with His wisdom and to help us live with reverence, humility, and obedience. He encouraged us to remember these three principles: honor God, treasure instruction, and live wisely.
We thank Elder Ayobami for his rich reflection!
Join us tomorrow for Wisdom September - Day 2, as we continue our journey with Proverbs chapter 2.
