The Power of Obedience in the Small Things

This morning, I had no intention of going anywhere. My plan was simple: rest, stay in, take it easy. But as I got up and moved through my morning, I felt that still, small voice nudge me gently but firmly to go to a particular place.
I didn’t argue. I didn’t reason it away. I recognised that nudge. I’ve come to know it as the Holy Spirit, not loud, not forceful, but clear and purposeful.
So I got dressed and headed out.
What happened next could have easily turned me around. The police completely blocked the road to my destination. A full road closure. No warning. No easy alternative. I was forced to take a diversion, one that added another 16 minutes to my journey.
Sixteen minutes might not sound like much, but when you’re already unsure about why you’re going somewhere, detours feel like reasons to quit. But I didn’t turn back. I knew better. That nudge wasn’t random, it was divine direction.
And I’m so grateful I followed it.
Not only was I immensely blessed, but I found myself in a position to be a blessing to others as well. Conversations, connections, and confirmations, none of which I would have experienced had I stuck to my plan instead of God’s prompting.
Obedience Often Comes Before Understanding
In John 2, at the wedding in Cana, Jesus hadn’t performed a public miracle yet. But His mother, Mary, saw the need and saw the possibility. She told the servants:
“Whatever he tells you to do, do it.”
They were told to fill water pots, not wine containers. Not barrels. Water pots are used for washing feet. It didn’t make sense. But they obeyed.
That obedience set the stage for Jesus’ first miracle: turning water into wine, and not just any wine, the best wine.
Your Blessing Might Be Waiting on the Other Side of Obedience
That detour I experienced today wasn’t a delay, it was divine timing. What looked like a disruption was a redirection into purpose.
The Holy Spirit is always speaking, often softly, often in ways that don’t make sense to the mind, but always with purpose.
What Has He Told You Lately?
• Did he tell you to call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while?
• To pray for someone?
• To take a step, even a small one, in a new direction?
• To forgive?
• To go when you wanted to stay?
Was your response yes? Or was it, “Maybe later”?
Today’s Reflection:
You don’t have to understand the why.
You just have to obey the what.
“Whatever he tells you to do, do it.”
Your next blessing, miracle, or breakthrough might just be waiting on the other side of obedience.
Prayer:
Abba Father, help me not to ignore the gentle nudge of Your Spirit. Give me the courage to say yes, even when it’s inconvenient, unfamiliar, or unclear. I know you lead me only into what’s good. I trust you. Speak and I’ll follow. In Jesus’ name, amen.
