The Cost of a Hard Heart | Wisdom September Day 29

Today’s reflection comes from my special guest, Sister Toju, who reminds us of the sobering reality of resisting correction.
A Warning from Scripture
Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed without remedy.”
Proverbs 29:1 (NIV)
Proverbs 29:1 paints a vivid picture: a person who repeatedly refuses correction sets themselves on a path that ends in destruction. The Message translation makes it even clearer:
“For people who hate discipline, only get more stubborn. There’ll come a day when life tumbles in, and they will break. But by then, it will be too late to help them.”
We’ve all seen it and sometimes been it. When pride closes our ears to correction, we are forced to learn the hard way.
Pharaoh’s Example
Sister Toju drew our attention to Pharaoh in Exodus. Despite God appealing through Moses again and again, Pharaoh hardened his heart. His stubbornness had irreversible consequences, even the death of the Egyptian firstborn. If only he had listened.
This story warns us that stiff-necked pride does not just affect us; it harms others, too.
A Mirror for Us
The question today is simple but searching:
Are there areas in our lives where we are stubborn or inflexible?
Have God or loved ones been correcting but we keep ignoring them?
Correction is not rejection, it’s love. Hebrews 12:6 reminds us, “The Lord disciplines those he loves.”
Choosing Wisdom
Instead of resisting, we can choose humility. By yielding to God’s correction, we open ourselves to growth, sanctification, and peace. A teachable spirit is the soil where wisdom grows.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word. Where we have been stubborn, soften our hearts. Where we have resisted correction, help us to yield to Your loving discipline. Guide us by Your Spirit into wisdom, so that our lives bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Let us be people who listen, who learn, and who live wisely.
