Teachable Hearts and Joyful Living

Scripture Readings
Scripture Readings

• “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7

• “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

Proverbs 17:22

Today was a little different for Wisdom September. My daughter shared a powerful reminder from Proverbs 1:7 that wisdom begins with reverence for God. This verse sets the foundation for the entire book of Proverbs. True knowledge starts with a humble heart that acknowledges God as the source of wisdom.

But since it is Day 17, I also turned to Proverbs 17 myself, and verse 22 stood out: “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

The two verses together carry a beautiful message. Wisdom begins with humility before God, and wisdom also leads to joy that brings health and life. A heart surrendered to God is a heart that can overflow with peace and gladness.

Practically, this means learning to step away from drama, bitterness, and strife because they crush the spirit. At first, protecting our peace can feel painful. But when we yield our hearts to God, He fills them with joy that heals. It is not superficial happiness, but a deep, sustaining joy rooted in His presence.

We are reminded by Jesus in Luke 12:15 that “life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” Better a simple table filled with love and laughter than abundance filled with anger and unrest. True wisdom prioritises peace, contentment, and the people God has entrusted to us.

So the call today is twofold:

1. Begin with reverence for God, the source of all wisdom.

2. Choose joy, peace, and love over strife and appearances.

That kind of wisdom not only blesses us, but it also brings life and refreshment to others.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, give us hearts that are humble before You and open to Your wisdom. Teach us to walk away from strife and embrace Your joy. May our lives overflow with peace and gladness that heals and restores. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
