Seek Understanding Before Speaking

ree

In Proverbs 18, Solomon reminds us of the power of our words. Verse 2 paints a vivid picture: fools don’t seek understanding; they simply rush to share their opinions. How often do we fall into this trap? Quick to speak, slow to listen, eager to judge.

A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.

Proverbs 18:2

Pastor Hazel encouraged us to pause and seek God’s perspective before rushing into words or actions. Real wisdom is not found in clever opinions but in waiting on the Lord for understanding.

King Saul’s story in 1 Samuel 13 is a warning of what happens when we act on our own opinion instead of God’s instruction. Saul thought he was doing the right thing, but his impatience cost him his kingdom. The lesson is clear: without God’s understanding, even our “good intentions” can miss the mark.

But when we wait on God and invite His understanding into our daily choices, the words that flow from our lips bring life, not destruction. Verse 21 of Proverbs 18 reminds us: “The tongue has the power of life and death.” Words rooted in God’s wisdom build, heal, and create. Words spoken without understanding destroy and divide.

Takeaway: Before speaking, pause. Before acting, pray. Invite God’s understanding into every decision, big or small. Then your words and actions will carry the power of life.

Prayer

Dear Lord, teach us to slow down, to seek Your wisdom before we speak or act. May our lips bring life, not destruction, and may our hearts delight in understanding You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
