Heeding Wise Instruction

Hello everyone. Once again, it is an absolute pleasure to share with you from God’s Word. Today, we’re looking at Proverbs 7, a chapter filled with richness and wisdom.
When I first read it, I thought, Oh my gosh, there is so much goodness here! At the Centre of it all is a strong call: the need to heed wise instruction.
The verse that stands out most for me is Proverbs 7:1:
“My son, keep my words and treasure my commands within you.”
The word treasure is powerful. It speaks of value, something you hold dear, something you protect. A few verses later, it says we should keep wisdom as the apple of our eye. God is reminding us how vital His wisdom is.
The chapter goes on to illustrate this truth with a story: the tale of a young man who encounters a seductress woman. She embodies temptation, foolishness, and evil. Everything about her is enticing: her words, her looks, her atmosphere. She says:
“I have spread my bed with tapestry, colored coverings of Egyptian linen. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.” (Proverbs 7:16–17)
Isn’t that how temptation works in our own lives, too? It looks good, it smells good, it sounds good. It seems rewarding. And yet at its core, it is destructive.
For us today, this might look like:
• Business practices that seem profitable but compromise integrity (like tax evasion).
• Relationships or friendships that lead us away from God.
• Habits that distract us from His Word.
• Thought patterns that keep us from walking in His wisdom.
At first, these things can look appealing. But verses 21–23 remind us of the danger:
“With persuasive words, she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. All at once, he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter…”
The sobering truth is that sin always leads to destruction. What feels enticing in the moment can cost us everything.
And that’s why Proverbs 7 pleads with us:
“Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say. Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths.” (Proverbs 7:24–25)
Reflection for Us Today
As I meditate on this chapter, I realise how important it is to ask the Holy Spirit:
• Where am I being led astray?
• What patterns, habits, or relationships are pulling me away from wisdom?
• Am I treasuring God’s Word as the most valuable thing in my life?
These are not always easy questions to ask—but they are necessary if we want to walk in life and freedom.
A Prayer
Holy Spirit, reveal to me any areas where I am being enticed away from Your truth. Keep me from the paths of destruction. Fill me with Your wisdom, so that I may treasure Your Word and walk in Your ways. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Friends and family, my prayer is that as we continue to grow in wisdom, God will keep us from the seductions of darkness and help us walk firmly in His light.
God bless
