Better a Simple Meal with Love

ree

“Better a small serving of vegetables with love than a fattened calf with hatred.” Proverbs 15:17 (NIV)

Today’s proverb is both simple and profound. It reminds us that the value of love and peace in our homes far outweighs wealth, appearances, or possessions.

Many people today are caught in the cycle of striving, working two or three jobs, chasing bigger houses, nicer cars, and keeping up appearances. But in the midst of all that, something precious can be lost: time, joy, and love with the very people we are working so hard for.

The “fattened calf” in Proverbs represents abundance and luxury. Yet, without love, it is empty. Better a simple table with joy, laughter, prayer, and peace than a feast marked by strife, bitterness, or hatred.

Jesus said in Luke 12:15, “Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” And in 1 Corinthians 13, we are reminded that without love, we have nothing. Love is the true measure of wealth.

Reflection

• Are we sacrificing love at home for appearances outside?

• Are we missing moments of joy, peace, and togetherness because of endless striving?

Wisdom’s call is clear: choose love. Choose simplicity with peace over abundance with strife.

Prayer

Eternal King of Glory, help us to set our priorities according to Your wisdom. Teach us to treasure love, peace, and presence more than possessions. May our homes, however simple, be filled with joy, laughter, and Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
