Proverbs 6:1–2
“My son, if you have become surety for your neighbour, have given your pledge for a stranger, you are snared with the words of your lips; the speech of your mouth catches you.” (Proverbs 6:1–2, AMP)
Today, I would like to share with you a passage from Proverbs 6:1-2, which cautions us against becoming a surety, guaranteeing a debt or obligation for another. This is something I once experienced firsthand.
A pastor friend of mine introduced me to someone who claimed to be a medical doctor. He needed financial help, and though I didn’t have the money myself, I decided to vouch for him with my uncle. I believed my pastor friend, so I assured my uncle that the money would be safe. However, later we discovered that this man was not a doctor at all; he was a scammer.
Thankfully, God intervened and the situation was resolved, but it taught me a lesson I will never forget. Just because someone is introduced by a trusted friend or even a man of God does not mean they are genuine. Proverbs is clear: we must be cautious not to guarantee debts for those we do not truly know.
Here’s the truth: many times, we are led by emotions instead of being led by the Spirit. We want to help, we want to trust quickly, but if we don’t pause and seek God’s direction, we can easily fall into traps. That’s why Solomon warns his son not to give his pledge lightly.
From this passage, I’ve learned a few key lessons:
• Always seek the leading of the Holy Spirit, not just your emotions.
• Be cautious about commitments that can entangle you.
• Even when someone comes recommended, pray and discern before acting.
My encouragement to you is this: be generous, be compassionate, but above all, be Spirit-led. Proverbs is not trying to make us suspicious of everyone; it is God’s wisdom protecting us from unnecessary pain and loss.
So, before you pledge or guarantee, pause. Ask the Spirit of God to guide you. And may you walk in wisdom that safeguards your life and honours God.
God bless you.
